Is neroazzurro the new blaugrana?
I wanted this post to be out several hours ago, just before the Coppa Italia final match between Internazionale Milano and AS Roma, but it didn't happen. The result just now is unimportant, but if you NEED to know go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009%E2%80%9310_Coppa_Italia and find out (I tend to visit Wikipedia for results because there they'll be stored forever). First, I want to talk about these two teams: both have won the Italian Serie A in the last decade, both have won, alternatively, the Coppa Italia twice (as of today one has won it thrice), and they are the only contenders for the other two trophies of Calcio. Inter will also play the final match for the UEFA Champions League and if they win they'll play the UEFA SuperCup and the FIFA Club World Cup in December. Last year, Barcelona FC won the Spanish treble for the first time in history, and they also got the three international trophies available for them. I'm not very well documented on prodigies of years past but I am quite confident that no other team has won six competitions of such a standard in the same year.
Just as in 2009, now there is at least one team that can do it all over again, and today was the beginning of the adventure. Inter has one of the best coaches in the world and extraordinary players in each position, a team that has won the last four League titles (one of them in court) but hasn't gone very far in international competitions, a team that was created to give foreigners the chance to play and which still has very few Italian players, the team that kicked Barça out from the current Champions League. Tonight, Inter won the Coppa Italia with a strike of Diego Milito at the end of the first half. They are in their way to repeat what Barça did last year, but they will encounter very difficult opposition. Being a supporter of Roma, my dreams for this year had been for Inter to win all international competitions and to lose all domestic ones against Roma (do you see the irony there?) but that can't happen anymore. Obviously, I still want Roma to win the League and the SuperCoppa but that's not perfect anymore.
I also have to talk about Bayern München. The German giants are not only the opponents of Inter in the Champions League, but also contenders in the final of the DFB Pokal (domestic Cup) and virtual winners of the domestic League with only one game to play, three points and many goals ahead of Schalke 04, the second place. They could too win all their competitions, although those will only be five because in Germany there is no game between the winners of the Cup and the League.
Naturally, there are great teams in other latitudes but it is unlikely that any team from Oceania, Asia, Africa, or even from the Americas, have a shot on winning the FIFA Club World Cup. Yes, I know that recently some Brazilian teams got that Cup but there are a number of situations against the South American teams, such as the jet-lag experienced by the players, the economical disadvantage against the European teams, the number of foreigners in the teams, the constant migration of national players especially to Europe, et cetera.
So, to think further:
-Is Inter a team mature enough to emulate what Barça did in 2009?
-If either Inter or Bayern (or a pleasant surprise from somewhere other than Europe) win it all, will there be a player(s) that get it ALL by winning the FIFA World Cup in South Africa too?
-Am I the only person experiencing a delirium now that most of the Leagues are ending and the World Cup is coming?
-What happened in Motherwell tonight? Isn't 6-2 a quite safe score for letting yourself doze for half an hour? How in the world 6 goals are not enough to win a game? Is any Edinburgh-based team interested in going to an international competition? See http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_prem/8658858.stm
